7 Tips to Improve Your Essay Writing Skills

Essay writing skills and indeed any other type of skills can always be improved upon. Practice makes perfect right? Here are seven tips to work on in an effort to improve your essay writing skills.

  1. Thesis

    2. When you are thinking about the topic of your essay, start with a very broad topic like flowers. Then narrow it down to something like flowers in the Amazon Rainforest. Keep narrowing it down until you have a very specific topic and carefully think your thesis statement through. You need to state what you mean to do in order to prove the thesis statement through your research too.

    3. Make an effective outline. An effective outline will keep the points of your research in order instead of jumping from one to the other. It will help you remember everything to put in the paper and it will also make it easier to research by going one bullet point at a time.

  3. Note cards

    4. Note cards are great to keep track of your research. If you use note cards than you can also write the reference source on each one as you write them to make it easier to complete your reference page.

    5. Research your topic fully. Ask yourself questions about the topic and then find the answers through your research.

  5. Clear and concise

    6. Make each sentence clear and concise. Do not use filler or fluff. Make each sentence integral to the paper.

  6. References

    7. Be sure to cite each and every reference that you use. Do it in whatever style the essay is assigned to whether it is MLA or APA. If you are not sure how those differ then you can find many examples online.

  7. Proofread

    8. Always proofread anything that you write. Check for spelling and punctuation errors. Also be sure to check for proper grammar. Do not rely on spellcheck. While it can be helpful at times it can also be really stupid at others. Read your paper out loud. Sometimes what looks right on paper sounds very wrong when you hear it spoken.

By following these 7 tips you will very soon be writing excellent essays. Write them down or print them out if you need them and hang them on the wall above your work space. Make a habit out of using these steps in every single paper you write and you will notice an improvement on your grades.
