AIDS Essay Writing Help and Ideas
Since it was first identified in 1981 AIDS has become one of the most feared diseases in the world. As well as causing a mini-revolution in sexual behaviour it has killed millions of people worldwide - over a million a year in Africa alone now die of it - and created 14 million orphans. Over 30 years after it first appeared there is still no cure, although treatments have advanced a long way. If you have to write an essay on AIDS you will have no shortage of material to work with, but what topics should you focus on and what sources should you trust?
What is AIDS? - AIDS is a syndrome which causes the immune system to fail, leaving the patient vulnerable to other health problems. It's caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, a retrovirus which attacks and destroys the immune system.
Who is at risk? - Anyone who has sex, is exposed to infected body fluids or is born to an infected mother.
Where did HIV come from? - HIV evolved from a similar virus, Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, which affects chimpanzees. In fact there are two types of HIV, HIV-1 and HIV-2, and they both evolved independently from different strains of SIV.
What is the future of treatment? - When HIV first appeared infection inevitably lead to death from AIDS-related diseases quite quickly, following a period of up to about ten years when no symptoms were visible. Improved antiretroviral drugs have now greatly improved the situation, and if someone is diagnosed with HIV before developing AIDS the infection can usually be managed to give them a more or less normal life. Scientists hope to develop a vaccine in the future that would prevent infection.
There are thousands of websites that discuss HIV and aids. Some are good sources, some not so good. Here are some guidelines.
Centers for Disease Control - This and similar professional, scientific websites contain a lot of good information on AIDS, what causes it and how infection can be avoided.
HIV/AIDS denialists - There are some individuals and organisations who deny that AIDS is caused by HIV. Ignore them; they are wrong.
"Alternative" medicine proponents - There are "alternative" medicine practitioners who claim to be able to cure AIDS with vitamins, diet changes or other methods. Ignore them too. There is no cure for AIDS at the moment.
Choose a topic that interests you, and back your writing with good reliable sources, and you'll find it easy to produce an informative essay on AIDS.
